Spin Separates Wedges
U Grooves verses V GroovesThe face of a wedge has tiny grooves that bite into the ball upon impact to give it spin. "V Grooves" have been the predominant groove type used in most irons and wedges. Alpha uses "U Grooves" on the face. The names are derived from the shape of the actual groove:
The U Grooves have an inherent advantage in the wider groove angle, allowing more surface area of the ball to enter deeper into the grooves. But there are other manufacturing tricks involved. Decreasing the spacing between grooves, increasing the groove depth, and widening each groove all enable the Alpha PF2 face to significantly sink its grooves into the surface of the ball. This friction imparts a backspin that cannot be achieved with traditional V Groove manufacturing.
The USGA Agrees - U is Better
After a 2-year study commissioned by the USGA to study U Grooves on the face of wedges, they concluded the following: "U-shaped groove clubs result in higher ball spin rates and steeper ball landing angles than V-shaped groove designs that were predominantly used in the past. The combination of a higher spin rate and steeper landing angle results in better control and less difficulty for shots hit from the rough to putting greens. As this degree of difficulty for shots hit from the rough has decreased, the importance of driving accuracy on the PGA Tour has lessened." The USGA has gone on to propose regulations around U Groove wedges to take effect in 2010. Until then, the Alpha PF-2 wedges are fully conforming for PGA use. And several PGA and Champions Tour players have taken advantage.
90 Reverse MillBefore the grooves are engraved, wedges go through a CNC-milling process. Milling makes the face extremely flat and smooth, which is needed for highly accurate clubs like putters and wedges. Alpha goes one step further. After milling the wedge, 90 tiny circular grooves are carefully embedded in the face.
This extra "reverse-milling" step in the manufacturing process is a patent-pending technique to impart even more friction on the ball. With the naked eye, you can actually count the 90 circular grooves on the face. The circular grooves, along with the horizontal U grooves, make wedge shots highly accurate and landings exceptionally soft. No other wedge goes through such a rigorous manufacturing process for the purpose of increasing the spin rate.
Popular on TourThe Alpha PF2 Wedges are used by some of the best Champion Tour players like Jack Ferenz and Steve Thomas
Professionals need maximum accuracy and precise control in the 60 - 100 yard range. They rely on the enormous backspin from the PF2 wedge to get out of the sand and land softly within feet of the pin. Specialty wedges from Alpha give them that competitive advantage in their short game.
What Golfers are Saying“I love the PF2 lob wedge. 60-70 yards out is my sweet spot where I just know that my next shot will be a little putt. That's how confident I am in hitting my PW” David
Kwon
“The spin is amazing. I've actually had balls roll back towards me after landing on the green.” Ken
Gibson, Golf Instructor
“I've been a long-time fan of Alpha golf clubs. Mostly used the drivers - the C830.2 and the V2. I wasn't ready to replace my Mizuno irons but I did try the Alpha wedge set. I was stunned. They look great and feel great. But the magic is in the soft landings. I know exactly where I'll land if I have a PF2 lob or sand wedge. My short game was my liability. And now it's one of my strong points. I would say I've shaved off 5-6 strokes thanks to your wedges." Sherwin
Moore
“The PF2 wedges are some of the most accurate clubs I've ever hit. They're reliable and consistent. On a 400 yard straightaway, I get 1 good drive from my Alpha C830.2 driver to get me in position and 1 lob from my Alpha PF2 wedge to get me close to the pin."
