Hybrid Irons

The RX-3 Hybrid Irons do not look like traditional hybrids or traditional irons.  They are made from hollow steel like hybrids, and have muscle backs like irons.  These hybrid irons are forgiving and easy-to-launch like hybrids, and give the accuracy and feel of irons.  They make an excellent replacement of traditional iron sets for players looking to improve their games.

Why Hollow Irons?

Most irons are made from a forging or investment casting process that fills in the dense core of an iron head with steel.  This is very different from a fairway wood or driver which have titanium shells and hollow cores.

So why a hollow steel iron?  It turns out the MOI benefits of a hollow core used to make forgiving woods increase the MOI and forgiveness of irons as well.

Moment of Inertia (MOI) in Irons

MOI is the measure of resistance to club twisting about the center of gravity axis when the ball is not hit on the center.  Higher MOI means more forgiveness during off-center shots since the club face twists less.

A lot of research and design has been applied to raise the MOI in drivers and woods.  Most of the techniques revolve around separating as much mass from the center of gravity as possible.  One way to do this for irons is to hollow out the back (ie cavity back) to push weight to the perimeter of the club.

Hollowing out the entire center of the iron takes the MOI to a whole new level.  Now all the weight is pushed out to the perimeter.

Game Improvement Irons

In addition to forgiveness, the RX-3 hybrid irons also help the recreational golfer with the basics - getting airborne on every shot and fighting slices.

The wide sole of the RX-3 moves the center of gravity low in the club.  This allows golfers to get the ball in the air easily.  Having a hybrid-like shape also pushes the center of gravity back away from the face.  This promotes "dynamic loft" for high soaring trajectories.

Many (right-handed) golfers struggle with slicing.  It usually happens since the club face is open at impact.  With up to 6.2mm in offset, the RX-3 promotes a golfer's hands to be in front of the club.  This helps square up the face at impact and eliminate that annoying slice to the right.

“I've always had trouble getting the ball in the air consistently with long and mid-irons.  The RX-3 irons have been amazing for me.  Getting airborne with my 5 and 6 is as easy as my old pitching wedge.  And the trajectories are beautiful.  Thanks Dr. Yeh and Alpha for making these irons.  They're truly game-improving.
